Srila Prabhupada introduced the Food for Life program in ISKCON in 1972. Srila Prabhupada, overcome with compassion at the sight of Bengali children picking through the garbage for scraps of food, told his disciples, with tears in his eyes that, “No one within a ten mile radius of any ISKCON centre should go hungry.” Similarly he instructed His Holiness, Gour Govinda Maharaja, in Bhubaneswar in 1977 that, “One who comes here must be fed. He must get prasad, Gour Govind. I will see the handa (brass pot) always full here.” When he was here every day hundreds of people were fed.
Following his words, we the devotees of ISKCON, Bhubaneswar are carrying out his order by distributing large quantities of prasadam to the poor people in and around Bhubaneswar every day amidst nama-sankirtan.
