In the year 1975 Indian Padayatra was under the leadership of His Holiness Lokanath Swami Maharaja. When the Padayatra was in Bhubaneswar, one of the bullocks carrying the chariot died. So Srila Lokanath Swami Maharaja left Sri Sri Gour Nitai deities and the second bullock with Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja.
From that time Srila Gour Govinda Swami worshiped Sri Sri Gour Nitai himself. Daily he cooked different items of bhoga and offered it to Them. He would do archana, arati and all other sevas, with loving devotion. After three months Lokanath Swami Maharaj returned to Bhubaneswar to continue the Padayatra and take back the deities.
Srila Gour Govinda Swami went to bring Gour Nitai from Their altar. At that time, Gour Nitai told him, “We don’t want to go! We want to stay here. We are happy here.” Srila Gour Govinda Swami came outside and told Srila Lokanath Swami, “Maharaja, Gour Nitai don’t want to leave. They want to stay here.” Lokanath Swami said, “But they are the padayatra deities. They should come back with us.” Then Srila Lokanath Swami arranged to start the padayatra with the deities. In the meantime one of the wheels of the chariot broke and the padayatra couldn’t go. Then Srila Lokanath Swami could understand that his Gour Nitai deities are now bound up by the love of Srila Gour Govinda Swami and that They didn’t want to leave.
He left Bhubaneswar leaving Gour Nitai with Srila Gour Govinda Swami. Since then Sri Sri Gour Nitai have been worshipped here in the temple as “arca-vigrahas.”
